MiniRAE 3000 and ppbRAE 3000 Set New Performance Standards

RAE Systems introduced the third-generation Photoionization detector (PID) based instruments, the MiniRAE 3000 and ppbRAE 3000. Both of these products will find applications in industrial settings, environmental monitoring, indoor air quality, and Hazardous Materials response applications. These products are intended for use where hydrocarbon-based chemicals pose a toxic threat. They can be used for both leak detection and industrial safety. The instruments both have intrinsic safety certifications for use in hazardous environments in the United States and Canada.

These new instruments are designed to provide real results in real time with a measurement response time of under three seconds, are water proof for easy decontamination and suitable for use in humid conditions. As with all RAE Systems instruments, these two have buttons designed to be used with up to three layers of gloves.

These products are ideal for remote wireless monitoring, particularly in rapidly changing environments. Wide measurement range, fast response, wireless interface, waterproof design and six-month data memory make these versatile and easy-to-use products for both industrial users and first responders.

The MiniRAE 3000 has an extended measurement range of 0.1 parts per million (ppm) to 15,000 ppm, giving it the widest measurement range available in the industry for a PID instrument. The ppbRAE 3000 offers an extended measurement range of 1 part per billion (ppb) to 10,000 ppm. Both products feature a large back-lit graphical display with graphical charting capability and easy viewing in any light condition. Both also feature a built-in flashlight for operation in dim lighting environments. The products include over 200 built-in correction factors   for accurately measuring a wide range of chemicals. No tools are required to field service the PID lamp or sensor or to replace batteries. Both instruments have optional charging cradles with a USB interface for downloading up to six months of data to a computer for either analysis or record keeping. For wireless data downloading, an optional Bluetooth interface is available. A wireless modem with a 500-foot range, compatible with the AreaRAE wireless sensor networks, will also be available. The instruments will be AutoRAE compatible for fast calibration and bump testing. Both also include a user interface configurable in 12 languages.

Both products are immediately available for shipment and can be bought through any RAE Systems Certified distributor. Each comes with a battery charger and Lithium Ion rechargeable battery. Other options include kits and wireless capability. Pricing for the MiniRAE 3000 starts at $3,795.00.  Pricing for the ppbRAE 3000 starts at $6,295.00. Oak Ridge National Laboratory validates Performance of Combined Radiation Detector / Dosimeter

Oak Ridge National Laboratory issued a certificate of successful testing of GammaRAE II R, a handheld integrated detector and dosimeter for gamma radiation. Performance tests included radiation response, environmental exposure, electromagnetic susceptibility, and mechanical ruggedness. All tests were done according to the American   Institute (ANSI) criteria for alarming personal radiation detectors (PRD) used for homeland security applications.

We have already seen adoption of our gamma and neutron personal radiation detectors and dosimeters by several states.

  • Radiation response tests included alarm functionality, accuracy of response, response time, false alarms, and energy response.
  • Environmental testing included the instruments’ response over a range of temperatures, operation during and after exposure to rain, and exposure to rapidly changing temperatures that might exist when taking the instrument from an office environment to an outside environment.
  • Electromagnetic tests included conditions such as electrostatic discharge and radio frequency susceptibility.
  • Mechanical testing involved exposure to vibration, mechanical shock, and impact.

GammaRAE II R is both a detector and a dosimeter.  The sensitive Cesium Iodide (CsI) scintillation crystal of the GammaRAE II R provides a fast, two-second response to radiological threats, while the energy-compensated PIN diode provides high dose rate range coverage and accurate dose measurements.  Thus the GammaRAE II R not only alerts the user to the presence of gamma radiation, but can also protect the user from over-exposure to radiation.

The GammaRAE II R is the first personal radiation detector (PRD) to provide rapid detection of gamma-ray sources even in potentially flammable environments. Certified intrinsically safe and water-submersible for decontamination purposes, the GammaRAE II R can be used in more environments than any other personal radiation detector.  GammaRAE II R alerts the user with a loud 85+ dB audible alarm, big, bright flashing LEDs, and a vibrating alarm. For stealth operations, law enforcement personnel can disable each alarm individually.

The GammaRAE II R is available now from all certified RAE Systems distributors. More information on this and RAE Systems radiation and multi-gas and wireless monitors can be found at www.raesystems.com.

Sensor Eliminates Lead for Global Hazardous Substances Compliance

RAE Systems was granted United States Patent Number 7,258,773 B2 for the first Solid Polymer Electrolyte (SPE™) Oxygen Sensor. The patent included 54 claims. This sensor technology will find applications in the industrial safety and first responder markets worldwide. Compared to other type oxygen sensors, it is unique in that is uses a solid polymer in combination with normally available air and moisture rather than the traditional hazardous electrolyte and lead wool. Three to five million oxygen sensors are currently being used in industrial applications. This new SPE O2 sensor is already available in RAE System’s QRAE II four-gas monitor.

With the growing number of global Reduction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directives, we are proud to be the first to bring a lead-free oxygen sensor to market,” said Peter Hsi, chief technology office for RAE Systems. “This new sensor offers a longer operating life and avoids many of the problems with traditional oxygen sensors.

RAE Systems began technology research to eliminate lead in its oxygen sensors in 2004. Although gas sensors are currently exempt from these standards, RAE Systems initiated a RoHS compliance project as part of its leadership in the gas detection industry. The European RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC took effect on July 1, 2006, and the Chinese and California RoHS directives took effect January 1, 2007. These directives limit the use of six hazardous materials in the manufacture of electronic and electrical equipment: lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium (chromium VI or Cr6+), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE).

Automatic Calibration with AutoRAE

Manual calibration of gas monitors can be time consuming. AutoRAE is an auto-calibration, bump test and charging system for RAE Systems gas monitors. The AutoRAE provides a time-saving solution:

• Calibration of up to 10 monitors at once eliminates manual    calibration

• Calibration data is stored on a PC for record keeping

• Instruments are charged overnight

AutoRAE instrument cradles are now available for the QRAE, QRAE Plus, MultiRAE Plus, EntryRAE, MiniRAE 2000, QRAE II, MiniRAE 3000 and ppbRAE 3000.
